System Administrators Roundtable (Kellie Conner, Manager, Polaris Customer Operations)  Back by popular demand, this session for Polaris system administrators provides time to discuss how you've deployed and manage Polaris as well as interesting technologies and products you're using in conjunction with Polaris.

"Town meeting" - Doing Business with Polaris Library Systems (Polaris Management Team) Do you have questions about Polaris' pricing policies and other business practices? Using a town meeting format, the Polaris management team will be on hand to answer your questions about the company.

Today's library users expect to get want what they want anytime, anywhere, in any way they want. High-tech gadgets make this more possible than ever, but also present a whole new set of challenges. Move beyond seeing these as high-tech toys to discover how to use them as tools to increase staff efficiency and promote library services.

 

 

Workflow Track Session Postcards for Dummies - Sean Hill, Henderson Public Libraries

 An overview of the Henderson Libraries' postcard notices project. In an attempt to save staff time and postage dollars, the Henderson Libraries decided to try integrating Polaris with Stamps.com to produce cost effective notice postcards. Come learn what they learned and see if this is something that could work for your library.

Get to Know the Top 5 Most Useful Polaris Tables - Becky Moren, Euless Public Library

With a basic understanding of five Polaris tables, even a SQL novice can write queries like a pro.  If you haven't used SQL since SA training, or need a little refresher course in how to write a Select statement, this session is for you.  By using the tables CircItemRecords, ItemRecordDetails, BibliographicRecords, PatronRegistration, and Patrons, you can extract a lot of useful data from your system.

Leaders in Libraries: What the Best Do Best! Session Two of Three - Serving the Community (David Bendekovic, VP Marketing & Sales) presents a model of a fundamental system for leading and managing U.S. public libraries.  Developed at the Leadership Institute at Syracuse University, this workshop synthesizes current ideas and information about what common elements characterize successful public libraries.  What you can expect:

Learn strategies and roles that work in communities where alternatives are so readily available.

Develop a framework for your library's future growth and development.

Conduct a self-assessment of your library's practices in order to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.

Making it Simple to Pay Fines & Fees on the Web in Polaris  - Vicki Terbovich - Maricopa County, AZ 

This presentation will describe the many ways customers can handle their library financial affairs with Polaris and in the Maricopa County Library District's branch libraries.  Fine and fee payment via the Web environment with Debit and Credit Cards will be showcased, along with other mechanisms for paying fines and fees in the Maricopa County Library District.

Michael Stephens (BA, Indiana University, 1987; MLS, Indiana University,1995) will be an Instructor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University starting in August 2006.  Focusing on Libraries and Technology is his specialty.  In 2001, he published The Library Internet Trainer's Toolkit -- a series of technology training modules in CD-ROM.  In March 2005, he was named one of Library Journal's Movers and Shakers 2005.  In November 2005, he served as a Scholar at the Chicago Public Library's Scholar in Residence program with Jenny Levine and Stephen Abram.

We're going back...waaaaay back.  Disco dominated!  Rock 'n Roll was righteous!  Hair was HUGE!  Wearing pink tinted glasses made everything grooooovy!   Time to celebrate the fifth anniversary of PUG and we are doing it with a HOUSE PARTY featuring board games from the past -- remember SORRY, OPERATION, DOMINOES, BACKGAMMON and others and groovin’ to sounds of the seventies.  Come and enjoy the food we use to EXIST on (diets on hold for the evening) them shimmy and shake it off on the dance floor.  Celebrate Good Times Come On!

Management Goes To The Movies - Lower Merion Library System staff

Tired of looking at Donald Trump's hair? Tired of sports jargon, power boardroom strategies, and references to gut feelings and instincts? Try the alternative -- a discussion-based, interactive approach to key management concepts using specially selected motion pictures including: Apollo 13 (Technology Problem-solving), A Night to Remember (Disaster Planning), Master and Commander (Leadership), and others. Designed and "beta-tested" by the Lower Merion Library System, Management Goes to the Movies prompted this response from a participant: "Thanks a lot. You've ruined the movies for me; all I see now is work!" Join us anyway.

PAC Customization Capabilities - Bryan Rubenau, PLS Senior Product Developer

From adding your library's logo to making your online catalog look like the rest of your library's website, learn how to customize your PowerPAC. Topics include:
* Customization options available in your current Polaris 3.2 release, along with the extended capabilities available in the upcoming Polaris 3.3 release.
* Descriptions of the Polaris 3.3 SA profile options and demonstration of how, through the modification of style sheets, the navigation and overall look and feel of PowerPAC 3.3 can be dramatically altered.
* Examples of several customized sites.
* Review a list of best practices for customizations to ensure that future upgrades are as painless as possible. 

While this is not a hands-on session, the presenter will create a new customized site so attendees can see step-by-step what's involved.

Pre-requisite knowledge:  Familiarity with basic HTML, CSS, XML, and XSL is helpful.

Intended audience:  System administrators or web developers
